I don't like bio's. If you want to know something, just ask! I love music, that's the only relevant thing really.
Talk about when tigers attack!
That baseline on the first track ‘Wearing the Colors’ sneaks up on you. The following ambush on your eardrums isn’t one to fear. It definitely keeps you moving. And when that jazzy sax steps on the scene, it’s like rescue by swanky night club tune. The sax part in this song is probably my favorite and I think the whole track stands out as the epitome of The Laughing’s vision for their EP - Tiger Cry.
And I’m not laughing at The Laughing’s EP. The album brings out so much more balance than what you hear with them live. You actually get to understand what Logan is trying to say through his lyrics. He keeps the whole big cat theme throughout each song. I like that. A theme. It shows planning and organization. And it definitely paid off because every song is worth listening to.
I’ve seen The Laughing compared to the likes of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, but I disagree. Although the synth/electronic sounds are similar, the overall music being made his is much more along the lines of Modest Mouse. Or, a dumbed down version of Modest Mouse’s poppier counterpart Franz Ferdinand.
The wind, the sax, gives a unique sound by providing a different blues beat on top of the familiar synth and guitar melodies. Not to discount the percussion, which only gives the band way more depth and allows for it to be catchy right to it’s core and not just through it’s melodic overtones.
I am also especially fond of the second and fourth tracks ‘Lions Can’t Fight’ and ‘Wait Until He Roars.’ Mostly because of the singable lyrics that hit close to home with me and probably every person with any amount of emotion bubbling inside of them.
Another great thing about this album is the mixture of song lengths. Silly? I don’t think so. You’ve got short catchy songs that get right to the point mixed with longer more instrumental songs that show the musical talent they have. The last song ’Tiger Cry’ is a good example of this lengthy goodness.
Although, one confusing aspect of this whole venture is that the last song, ‘Tiger Cry’ (The title track), is followed by ’Gospel,’ which is the exact same song. Did they do this on purpose? Did they mess up? Or did someone else? Seems like a big booboo to make. I’m curious about that.
The album only cost about 6 bucks. If you can’t get it local, they’ve got it on I Tunes.
Logan, Abram, and Grant of The Laughing will be playing again at 101X Homegrown Live with The Black and White Years and Almost Already on November 28th.
They aren’t signed to a label right now but are definitely worth checking out.
