It’s not hard to tell when you first hit ‘play’ on one of Pauly C’s demos that until the music starts, he’s a bit shy. But this born and raised Canadian is anything but inhibited when he opens his mouth and the explosive, soul/folk/acoustic rock sound erupts from inside.  

Pauly C, a 25-year-old from Nova Scotia, may not have picked up a guitar until his first year of college but the sweet, relaxed plucking of the strings that exerts itself from his songs seems to come naturally. A performer who had never sang in front of anyone until a karaoke night in Japan, Pauly C found his confidence that night and began to write and sing his own songs.  His raspy vocals mixed with the flowing acoustics in songs such as “Asleep In My Mind” make it obvious that once the mic is on and his fingers are dancing across the strings he is no longer a victim of stage fright.

Currently Paul is working around open mic nights to get his sound heard, letting the bustling music scene in Halifax get the first real taste of his soulful sound.

“The music scene is excellent.  Loads of good musicians playing all the time downtown.  Music is a part of life out here,” he explains.

 Though Pauly C is currently unsigned, he is working on finding a group of band members and is putting down tracks for his debut CD with hopes to have it out and ready to be heard by Spring of 2008.  And while the demos that have been heard so far follow a strictly acoustic route, Paul is open the possibility of creating a new sound to add to his debut album.

“There are a few songs I am working on now that hopefully will have an electric guitar component to them as well as bass, drums and maybe some software instruments” he has said.

But for now, Paul says that he just wants to let the music lead the way, giving us whatever comes out of him.
