I've loved music ever since I bought my first MC Hammer cassette. Since then, my musical palate has developed...somewhat. I have lived in Philly my whole life and traveling the world has helped me appreciate it even more.
A night at Back 2 Basics is what it is: an improvisational, impromptu sonic tapestry of
beats, rhythms, and grooves. Philly’s
own King Britt, of Digable Planets fame, represents the vibes of the old school
while embracing the new with the accompaniment of a rotating cast of international
DJ’s and the ever-changing Back 2 Basics live band consisting of the who’s who
of the underground jazz and funk scene of Philly. Equipped with an amazing beer list, delicious
food, and an eccentric staff, the recently renovated Silk City Diner is the
perfect venue for this weekly residency.
After an
interesting, yet somewhat disappointing Jay-Z show that ended at 11:00 at the newly
renamed Fillmore at the TLA, my friends and I were still ragin for some more
music, so we headed over Silk City because there were rumors of ?uestlove
spinning with King Britt. It made sense,
since ?uest was listed as a November guest for Back 2 Basics. I am glad I assumed he would be there despite
the fact that he did NOT show up because I am not sure if I would have gone to
uncover one of the City of
Entering
the brightly lit reformed old-fashion diner, my ears were pierced by the thumping
bass lines. As I walked into the main
area, there was a makeshift breakdance battle. On the perimeter, were people from all walks of life gathering to enjoy
the sights and sounds.
On the
small, cramped stage, jammin’ out was a drummer, bassist, keyboardist,
percussionist, and a guitarist. Unexpectedly,
two guys with instrument cases walked in the door as if they came for an
open-mic night. Joining in, like they
had been there the entire night, the horns added an extra layer to the Back 2
Basics groove.
During a band intermission, Britt’s co-MC for the night, Dozia, helmed the 1’s and 2’s
to keep the party bumping until the band headed back on stage. At this point, my friend identified that Philly
MC/producer Hezekiah was standing in the audience. Prior to that night, I had never heard of him
or his music, but he is definitely a unique voice in the city’s hip-hop scene,
which perpetually stands in the shadow of the legendary Roots crew.
Next thing I know, it’s 2am and I realize, I have work tomorrow. Before the party ended I head home, but one thing’s for sure, for 5 bucks before midnight, Back 2 Basics is an event not to be missed. What else do you got goin on a Monday night…sleeping?
